Backgrounds

When you create your character, you may choose a background to represent some of the life experience and work you've done before turning to an adventuring career.
At 1st level you can choose among the sample backgrounds (given below) or work with your DM to create another background that fits your character better.
You may also opt to forgo a background and gain a Perk instead. This option is good for players who don't want to follow a sample background, don't want to create a new, or for those that seek simplicity in their character.

Sample Backgrounds (W.I.P)

Artisan

Bounty Hunter

Charlatan

Guild Thief

Highborn

Priest

Sage

Scribe

Soldier

Thug

Tribesman

Villager

Wandering Entertainer

Creating Backgrounds

Each background consists of 3 parts: Connection to the world, Skill Bonuses and Tools of the Trade.

Connection to the world

All backgrounds gives you a connection to the world. This often comes in the form of a connection to a place in the world where you can get food and lodging for relative to no cost.
If it makes sense within the setting and with the background, it can give you special benefits.
For example, the Soldier has a military rank that gives him food and lodging (and maybe some authority) within a garrison of an army he might have served in before.
Or as the Artisan, who receives a guild membership, and can find food, lodging and supplies within a Guild Hall of his respective trade.

Skill Bonuses

All backgrounds gives you a +1 Stackable Bonus to two different skills that have some relevance to the chosen background.
For example, the Wandering Entertainer gets a +1 bonus to Trade and Acrobatics, while the Priest gets a +1 bonus to Occult Lore and Diplomacy?

Tools of the Trade

All backgrounds gives you some starting equipment that costs around 10-20 gp total. These tools of the trade are often something you need to perform basic work with your given background.
For example, the Scribe has collected 2 quill pens, ink in a bottle, parchment and a foldable writing table.
The Highborn have collected fine clothings, Signet Ring, Sealing Wax and maybe even a Horse with a Saddle.
